Five members of the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams received All North Region honors for their effort on the basketball court, while three more student-athletes were recognized for their hard work in the class room.

Men’s Basketball won the North Region Title and swept all three major North Region awards. Dana Abe was named the North Region Most valuable Player after leading the league with 21.6 points per game. Abe also finished in the top 5 of the Region in rebounding and 3 point percentage.

Abdul Mohamed was named the Defensive Player of the Year after leading Shoreline to the best defense in the NWAC. The Phins lead the entire NWAC in opponents field goal percentage, opponents 3 point field goal percentage and opponents points per possession. Mohamed finished 3rd in the North Region in steals and was tasked with defending the best perimeter threat from each opponent.

Anddrew Hawkins was also recognized by the North Region coaches receiving All North Region Second Team honors. Hawkins’ influence on a basketball game can be found all over the stat sheet. He is the second leading scorer for the Phins with 12.5 points per game, second in assists with 3 per game and second in rebounds with 6 per game.

Head Coach Donald Brady was named the Coach of the Year for the North Region. Brady took over the Men’s Basketball program after the 2013-14 season in which Shoreline had a 2-12 North Region record. In his first two seasons Brady led the Phins to improved win totals but each season fell one win short of the NWAC Tournament. The 2016-17 season marked a major step in turning around the Men’s Basketball program as the Phins finished the regular season with a 17-8 overall record and a 10-4 record in the North Region.

Women’s Basketball star Enjunay Jones-Lee was named to the All North Region 1st Team. Jones-Lee was 4th in the Region with 19 points per game. Jones-Lee led the entire NWAC shooting 87% from the Free Throw line while finishing 4th in Free Throws made. Sophomore Point Guard Dani Hayes was honored on the All Defensive Team. Hayes averaged 2.64 steals on the season as she defended the opposition’s primary ball handler.

Enjunay Jones-Lee turned up on another awards list for her stellar work in the classroom. Jones-Lee and Men’s Basketball players Brady Anderson and Joe Ghebrehiwot were named to the NWAC All-Academic team. All three student-athletes have been committed in the classroom during their time at Shoreline and all three maintain a GPA above 3.5.

SHORELINE, WA

It’s a new era in Shoreline Women’s Basketball as new head coach Amy Donovan takes over. Donovan has 10 years of combined coaching experience, beginning as a camp counselor from 2007-2012 for the Pete Newell Tall Women’s Camps, which focus on footwork and efficiency in the low post position. From 2010-2012 Donovan was an assistant varsity basketball coach and substitute teacher at Battle Ground High School. In 2012-13, while completing her Masters of Education she assisted at the University of Washington with coaching and operations aspects of the team, including film breakdown, team travel, budget management, and advanced analytics/scouting. After graduating from UW in 2013, Donovan worked in the non-profit sector for the A PLUS Youth Program and Basketball Education in Action from 2013-2015, both of which focused on providing educational and life skills tutoring and high-level basketball training. During the 2015-16 season, Donovan was the head varsity coach at Holy Names Academy in the Metro League. 15 players that Donovan has coached at the high school level have moved on to play at the collegiate level, including the PAC-12, Ivy League, and several Division II and Division III conferences.

Most recently during the 2016-17 season, Donovan was an assistant coach at Northern Arizona University. The team exceeded expectations in the Big Sky Conference, going 9-21 and finishing in 10th place despite being picked to finish 12th in both pre-season polls. While at NAU, Donovan was also in charge of team travel, assisted with recruiting and academic monitoring, and helped implement a new defensive system for the 2016-17 season.

With years of division one experience the 2017-18 Dolphin squad will be Donovan’s first chance to make her name as a head coach at the collegiate level. The Phin’s return zero players from the team a year ago, consequently building the Women’s Basketball program back up will be a lot of hard work but as Donovan has proved in her past, she is not afraid to roll up her sleeves and get to work. Donovan loves the game of basketball and will be a great role model for the basketball community in Shoreline.

The Starting Five:

#12 Brittaney Carrington, 5’5″ Freshman Guard from Blaine High School, Blaine, WA

#10 Madison Dionisio, 5’8″ Freshman Forward from Roosevelt High School, Seattle, WA

#14 Alysha Gustafson-Savella, 5’9″ Freshman Forward from Ka’u High School, Ka’u, HI

#11 Tristan Davis, 5’8″ Freshman Forward from Ka’u High School, Ka’u, HI

#32 Cassidy Callihan, 5’7″ Freshman Center from Eastmont High School, East Wenatchee, WA

In Game 1 of the season the Phin’s dropped the game to Centrailia but the bright spot was Freshman Alysha Gustafson with a Shoreline scoring high of 14 points & 8 rebounds. Brittaney Carrington chipped in with 7 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals.

The Phin’s next play on the road at Green River CC, Wednesday November 29th at 5pm, before coming home Saturday December 2nd vs. Big Bend CC at 3pm.

Shoreline Community College Suspends Women’s Basketball 2017-18 Season

Based on low participation and a multitude of athlete injuries, Shoreline Community College and the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) mutually agreed that suspending the Women’s Basketball 2017-18 season would be best.

We highly praise the perseverance our student-athletes demonstrated under challenging circumstances, said Steve Eskridge, Director of Athletics. It takes time to develop a rhythm as a team, and these players showed amazing determination and spirit in facing off against more seasoned NWAC programs. We also greatly appreciate and want to thank everyone who supported the team this year.

“Newly hired Head Coach, Amy Donovan, is already at work building the 2018-19 Women’s Basketball PhinNation season,” said Eskridge.

February 25, 2019

SHORELINE, WA

As the winter season winds down and the Women’s Basketball team is on the outside looking in at the playoffs, Freshman Forward Clara Hansen is developing into a star in front of Phin Nation’s very own eyes. Clara Hansen is averaging 12.6 points per game and 9.8 rebounds in conference play in 2019. Clara has 8 double doubles (double digit totals in both points & rebounds) in conference play with her best game coming on Saturday (2/23) against Whatcom Community College, where she scored 18 points, 16 rebounds and dished 6 assists.

Coach Rodney Walker describes her as “starting to find her footing.”

Hansen is a 5’11” athlete with great ability to rebound and block shots because of her size and strength. However, she is taking her game to a whole new level. As of late Clara is knocking down more three pointers and playing the point guard position at times. Clara has a very high ceiling as is indeed starting to find her footing.
